Artisans create unique, handcrafted works of art crafted using local materials and ancient traditions and skills passed down from generation to generation. These skills are part of the history and culture of a place and people. Selling their work through fair trade partners preserves these traditions. There may be additional benefits to the artisans such as training and learning new techniques.
Importantly, it allows artisans to earn much-needed extra income and be independent. When mothers earn income they spend it on improving the lives of their children and on education. Employment creates opportunities to rise above poverty and other issues, and creates opportunities for their whole community.
The AfriBeads artisans preserve the age-old skills of Ugandan basket weaving. They use sustainably collected palm leaves from the local area. Traditional crafts leave little impact on the environment.
The AfriBeads artisans have also embraced new skills. Their Australian partners facilitated Molly to go to sewing school and bought sewing machines. Volunteers taught Sophia how to make wax wraps and other members how to make candles and soap. The AfriBeads artisans wanted to open their own shop in Uganda and again their partners assisted with the lease, shop furniture, and merchandising.
