Using upcycled paper to create AfriBeads paper bead jewellery is a wonderful use of an existing sustainable product. In addition to reducing waste by using paper that would otherwise end up in landfill, it reduces the consumption of energy required to produce new beads from non-sustainable materials. The paper for the beads is sourced from a local site in Kampala which collects old paper posters, marketing material and magazines discarded from local printing businesses.
AfriBeads bowls and platters are all made with 100% natural material that is sourced locally by the AfriBeads makers in Uganda. The makers use local raffia palm leaf and banana palm. The basket maker wraps the raffia around long strips of banana leaf stems. The banana leaf stems are firm and give structure to the basket. Basket weaving is carried out from the woman’s home and requires no consumption of energy. This is a traditional craft in Uganda, with the knowledge on how to weave passed down through the generations, making it a truly sustainable process.
